Module 5: Memory Learning & Improving Concentration

Today our group instructor, Miss Ainatul Fathiyah binti Abdul Rahim teaches our group about Module 5. Generally, this module is about:

  • Understanding memory process
  • Memory strategies
  • Understanding concentration
  • Strategies for improving concentration
  • Reading / Study system (SQ3R)

She also taught us about learning pyramid. (It is the method of training and retention rates)
Learning Piramid

There are many types of memory one of the types that she focused on are:

  • Sensory Memory (SM- It is the short-term element of memory. It acts like a stimulant used through five senses that is very accurate but for briefly.
  • Short-term Memory (STM- It can recall the information at any time. It can be called the ability to remember and process information. It's only available typically 10 seconds, but can go up to 1 minute
  • Long-term Memory (LTM- Even if we think we forget something, it's just the feeling of humanity. It is obviously can hold for the lifetime.

Miss Aina also gave us the strategy to improve ourself especially for students one of it is:
  • Massed practice (good for the person who easily remember things, can study last minute, NOT RECOMMENDED) VS Spaced practice (great for the person who hard to remember things, need time, pyramid memory, VERY RECOMMENDED)
  • Break reading material down- Study one by one and not rushed
  • Elaborate Strategies

Causes of poor concentration

There are many reasons for a student to have poor concentration such as:
  • Depression- It is a sadness that disrupt your daily life
  • Sleep deprivation- It is when you didn't get enough sleep
  • Family problems- It always usually from parents either both gets in a fight or always in favour of another child
  • Poor nutrition- University student always got this problem because they need to save their money

Strategies to improve concentration

Miss Aina also gave us the strategies to improve concentration such as:
  • Avoid distraction- Turn off the cell phone and try avoid study near the television
  • Set up a schedule- Student need to have their own schedule and stick to it. They also need to create a schedule to reset themselves to avoid stress and always follow the schedule.
  • SQ3R- Survey-Question-Read-Recite-Review
  • Goals- Develop the goal that only can be achieved if it is being worked hard
  • Reward yourself- Students need to gave themselves if they achieve their goal to make them dedicated to achieve bigger goals

Module 2: Goal Setting

Assalamualaikum wbt. My name is Azim and this program interim will be filled with courses that must be taken for all of UiTM student. One of the courses is UED 102 which is study skills that like it's called, skill in the study. At first I thought it's a useless courses that I must take but then it's really helped me to study. Last week, all of the student (part 1) is being lectured other than supposedly by group because most of the lecturers that being assigned to handle the designated group is busy. During the next week, the courses progress as usual and glad I didn't sleep after Sahur because the class at 8.15 am (stay awake to do other homework because I brought the same style of study from school). Module 2: Goal Setting & Learning Management System Goal setting may involve establishing specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bounded (SMART) objectives, but not all researchers agree that these SMART criteria are necessary.
